23 Students Receive Art Awards
Twenty-three students received awards totaling $2,900 during an opening reception for SUNY Oneonta's Annual Juried Art Exhibition on April 13. On display through May 13 at the Martin-Mullen Art Gallery in the college's Fine Arts Center, the exhibition features more than 100 works by student artists. Featured artworks were chosen from an open jury process and works entered by the art faculty. Painting, drawing, sculpture, digital print, digital video and an assortment of mixed media make up this year's offerings.

192 Students Receive Susan Sutton Smith Award
A total of 192 students received the SUNY Oneonta 2016-2017 Susan Sutton Smith Award for academic excellence. To be eligible for the award, a student must be a freshman, sophomore or junior with a grade-point average of 3.9 or higher. Student award winners receive a certificate, a gift card to the campus bookstore, and an invitation to attend the annual Susan Sutton Smith Lecture and reception. Dr. Florian Reyda, professor of biology, will deliver this year's Susan Smith Lecture titled, "Parasites, Evolution and Us," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, in the Otsego Grille of the Morris Conference Center on campus.

35 Scholar Athletes Inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma
SUNY Oneonta recognized 35 student athletes by inducting them into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society, during a luncheon held on April 6. To qualify for induction a student athlete must have achieved at least junior standing with a cumulative 3.4 grade point average while earning a varsity letter in an NCAA intercollegiate sport. Each student athlete must also be of good moral character and have the endorsement of his/her coach and the Chapter President.

Hooked on Tonics Competes in Regional A Cappella Event
SUNY Oneonta's Hooked On Tonics a cappella group competed in an International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) Northeast Quarterfinal on Feb. 25 at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The 14-member ensemble performed a set that included "All Time Low" by John Bellion, "I Want it That Way" by the Backstreet Boys and a Michael Jackson medley. "All Time Low" and "I Want it That Way" featured original arrangements by group member Sydney Kurnit, who is a sophomore at SUNY Oneonta.

335 Graduates Honored at December Recognition Ceremony
More than 300 students met requirements for graduation from SUNY Oneonta following the Fall 2016 semester. Graduates were honored at a December recognition ceremony hosted by College President Nancy Kleniewski and held in the Dewar Arena of the Alumni Field House. They also are eligible to participate in the college's commencement on May 13.

Six Earth & Atmospheric Sciences Students Awarded Scholarships
The SUNY Oneonta Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences awarded six students scholarships at its annual Majors' Night in October. Now in its 40th year, Majors' Night offers the department's undergraduates the opportunity to network with alumni who return to campus for the event, where they share their experiences and offer advice to current students.

Latino Students Collaborate On Award-Winning Book
A book featuring autobiographical vignettes by 29 Latino SUNY Oneonta students and recent alumni won two awards at the Latino Literacy Now's International Latino Book Awards. Titled "Mi vida en los Estados Unidos, jovenes hispanohablantes cuentan sus experiencias" ("My Life in the United States, Young Hispanic Heritage Language Speakers Write About Their Experiences"), the book is a collection of common experiences growing up with two languages and two cultures, and similar life struggles.

Coastal Carolina University graduates Class of 2016
Approximately 1,100 students were graduation candidates for Coastal Carolina University's commencement ceremonies on May 6 and 7, 2016, at the HTC Center on campus. Grand Strand businessman and civic leader Dennis L. Wade was the speaker for the event, which consisted of four separate ceremonies.

Students Get Inside Look at Presidential Politics During N.H. Field Experience
Fifteen SUNY Oneonta political science students got an inside look at the presidential election process during a five-day trip to New Hampshire that culminated Feb. 9 with the first-in-the-nation primary. The trip is part of a semester-long course, POLS 216: Presidential Election Campaigns, taught by Associate Professor of Political Science Gina Keel. While in New Hampshire, students attended candidate rallies, town hall meetings and other events, witnessing firsthand the campaigning and media frenzy in the last days before the primary.
